Abstract

Ginoid lipodystrophy (LG), which is synonymous with cellulite, is considered an unsightly dermatosis that
afflicts many people, especially women around the world, a condition responsible for relevant psychosocial
disorders. LG occurs mainly in the pelvic region, lower limbs and abdomen, and can affect any part of the body
except scalp, palms and toes, being characterized by a padded “orange peel” aspect. Its etiology is unknown,
however genetic, emotional, metabolic, hormonal factors, besides age, sex, hypertension, obesity, smoking,
physical inactivity and poor diet predispose its appearance. This review describes the etiopathogenesis of LG
and the use of modeling massage with mitigation measure in the prevention and control of this condition. The
research was carried out from a review of the specialized literature published between 1994 and the most
current 2019 using as descriptors in Portuguese and English, isolated or in combination: Ginoid lipodystrophy,
cellulite, modeling massage and adipose tissue. Available treatments should consider noninvasive or minimally
invasive methods to replicate the physiology of the affected area. Thus, modeling massage becomes a method
that mitigates the onset of LD and its control when diagnosed.
