The disposal of waste in water courses is a practice that is occurring frequently and people generally ignore the negative impact of this act on the aquatic environment transferring over the years particles of these materials to the entire food chain reaching humans, characterizing a public health problem. The present article describes an action of environmental education where the theory in the classroom is developed and later a practice in the field showing the reality of the municipalities as to the incorrect disposition of residues in the margins of the urban streams next to students of the 4º and 5º year of a school unit of Itapira-SP. Despite the importance, the subject is little debated and studied, especially in the academic environment. The results demonstrated that the activities developed in this study characterize plausible actions regarding the sensitization of young people and educators in the issues related to the preservation of water bodies and the correct disposal of solid waste and their impacts on the aquatic environment serving as a link participation in the development of the neighborhood and the cities where they live.
