Abstract

Population aging is a global phenomenon associated with an increase in physical and mental conditions resulting from degenerative processes, often related to comorbidities acquired throughout life. Objective: To understand the importance of nurses' role in promoting the health of older adults. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review conducted in the Virtual Health Library between February and April 2025. A total of 76 articles were identified, of which 14 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and comprised the final sample. Results: A high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative diseases was observed among the elderly population. Effective nursing actions were identified, including guidance for older adults and their families, encouragement of physical, social, and recreational activities, strengthening of support networks, and promotion of self-care. Interventions such as social groups, workshops, and qualified listening practices contributed to reducing emotional symptoms and improving quality of life. Conclusion: The nurse’s role, grounded in scientific evidence and empathy, is essential for promoting mental well-being, autonomy, and healthy aging. Furthermore, it contributes to strengthening family support and reducing the burden on health services.
