The relationship between the consumption of animal protein and the quality of the diet is a key factor for the quality of life of the elderly, and the deficiency of meat contributes to the emergence of pathologies. Aspects such as socioeconomic conditions, social isolation, periodontal problems, chewing and use of inadequate prostheses, reduced taste and smell, underlie the deficiency in the consumption of animal protein among the elderly. The present work consists of a systematic review of the literature with search for studies, carried out in order to demonstrate the damages to the functionality of the elderly caused by the deficiency in the consumption of animal protein, focusing on the factors that most contribute to this situation, correlating with age, gender, and socioeconomic conditions. The searches were performed in four bibliographic databases Scielo, PubMed, LILACS and IBECS. In the present study, it was possible to verify that chewing, the deficit in sensory perception and socioeconomic condition were found factors, which bring more inference regarding deficiency in the consumption of animal proteins, especially meat products, by the elderly studied.
